Steven Knight created the British period crime drama television series Peaky Blinders. It is set in Birmingham and follows the Peaky Blinders' activities immediately following the First World War. A real urban youth gang that existed in the city from the 1880s to the 1920s serves as a loose basis for the fictional group. Tommy Shelby is played by Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory plays Elizabeth "Polly" Gray, Paul Anderson plays Arthur Shelby, Sophie Rundle plays Ada Shelby, and Joe Cole plays John Shelby, a senior member of the gang. Sam Neill, Annabelle Wallis, Iddo Goldberg, Tom Hardy, Charlotte Riley, Finn Cole, Natasha O'Keeffe, Paddy Considine, Adrien Brody, Aidan Gillen, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sam Claflin, Amber Anderson, James Frecheville, and Stephen Graham appeared across multiple episode of the series. The series debuted on September 12, 2013, and it aired on BBC Two through the fourth season (with repeats on BBC Four) before moving to BBC One for the fifth and sixth seasons. The rights to distribute the show in the United States and around the world were acquired by Netflix through a partnership with Endemol and the Weinstein Company. It was announced in January 2021 that the sixth and final series would be released in 2022. The Immortal Man, a full-length film that will be distributed by Netflix and set a few years after the series finale, will begin filming in September 2024.

Peaky Blinders is an English crime drama that begins in 1919, a few months after the end of the First World War, and centers on a family with mixed Irish Traveller and Romani roots in Birmingham. It centres on the Peaky Blinders street gang and their ambitious, cunning crime boss Tommy Shelby. The gang comes to the attention of Major Chester Campbell, a detective chief inspector in the Royal Irish Constabulary sent by Winston Churchill from Belfast, where he had been sent to clean up the city of the Irish Republican Army flying columns, the Communist Party of Great Britain, street gangs, and common criminals.[ 1][2] Winston Churchill (played by Andy Nyman in series 1 and Richard McCabe in series 2) charges him with suppressing disorder and uprising in Birmingham and recovering a stolen cache of arms and ammunition meant to be shipped to Libya.[ 3][4] The first series came to an end on December 3, 1919, or "Black Star Day," when Billy Kimber's betting pitches at the Worcester Races would be taken over by the Peaky Blinders. The Peaky Blinders' criminal organization expands in the "South and North while maintaining a stronghold in their Birmingham heartland" in the second series. 5] It begins in 1921 and ends with a climax at Epsom racecourse on 31 May 1922, Derby Day.[ 6]
The third series begins in 1924 and follows Tommy and the gang as they expand once more, this time internationally, entering a world that is even more dangerous. The anti-communist Father John Hughes (Paddy Considine), a painter Polly hires to paint her portrait, Ruben Oliver (Alexander Siddig), the Russian Grand Duchess Tatiana Petrovna (Gaite Jansen), and Linda Shelby (Kate Phillips), Arthur's new wife, are also featured in the third series. Peaky Blinders learns that the New York Mafia, led by Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody), is coming to avenge the murder of his father that was committed in the previous series. The fourth series ends following the general strike in May 1926, with Tommy obtaining information from communist leader Jessie Eden and being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1927. Two years later, on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, the fifth series begins on December 7, 1929, the morning of a rally led by Sir Oswald Mosley. The sixth series premieres on December 5, 1933, the day that prohibition in the United States is lifted. As a result of the Nazi Party's rise to power in Germany, Mosley's British Union of Fascists' membership has increased.
